Steve Vanderhoof
Head Coach

Coach Steve was an original member of the Glenwood Springs Barracuda Swim Team in 1970. After years of age group, Jr. /Sr. and college swimming, Steve continues to swim regularly today.  He was the head coach for the Barracudas during college, when our team was a summer-only club.  After years in business and raising a family, Steve has returned to coaching as an ASCA Level II coach.  Along with his current Team Sopris age group duties, he is also the Glenwood Springs High School swim coach. With years of competitive swimming, distance/adventure running, triathlons, along with being a devoted Crossfit exerciser, coach Steve brings a passion for training to the team.  He understands the physical and mental benefits of exercise.

Bob Branden
Assistant Coach

Coach Bob was born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio where he was as an Age group swimmer for the Lake Erie Silver Dolphins.  Bob enjoyed childhood success with swimming, and at age twelve won events at the national junior Olympics, and becoming one of the fastest twelve-year-old in the country that year.  In high school Bob was in the top five in the country, placing second in the 200 IM at state behind the national record setter.  Bob attended College at Southern Methodist University.  While swimming for SMU, the team placed second at NCAA’s his senior year.  His coaching experience includes: SMU graduate assistant coach from 1982-83, Mustang Swim Club Coach from 1983-1993 (This was the club component to the SMU college program that in the 1984 Olympics America defeated Germany in the 800 men’s free relay.  Two of the American swimmers were from the Mustang Swim Club.), Lone Star Masters Coach from 1988-1997 (This masters club was started and run by Jim Montgomery four-time Olympic champion), ane most recently the Avon Recreation Center Coach from 1997-2004. 

Clara Thorsen
Assistant Coach
Dev & AG1

Coach Clara began swimming with Team Sopris starting at the age of 7 in 2000, and continued to swim with Team Sopris until 2011. She also swam with the Glenwood Springs High School team as the go to butterflier and competed in open water swimming a few times. In High School and through most of college, Clara taught swim lessons with the Community Center. She continues to swim to this day. When not at the pool, Clara trains Agility and other sports with her dogs. She also like to hike and paint.



Paul Dudley
Substitute Coach

Starting in 1998, Paul has coached for a variety of YMCA, club and high school swim teams.  He was the founder and head coach of the Bayfield Swim Team in Bayfield, WI from 2001-2005.  Upon moving to Colorado, Paul took a position with Legacy High School in Broomfield, Colorado as an assistant and head coach for the boys’ swim team.  From 2006-2009, Paul served as an assistant coach for the girl’s swim team at Grandview High School in Aurora, CO.  With both programs, Paul worked with a range of athletes, from beginners to High School 5A State contenders. Paul joined Team Sopris in January 2013. 

Paul teaches Spanish at Basalt High School and previously owned and taught at the Yoga Space of Glenwood Springs, bringing those skills to his dryland training for our swimmers.  When not on his yoga mat or the pool deck, Paul loves to rock climb, snowboard and dream of his next travel adventure.

Karstin Moser
Substitute Coach

Karstin's love of swimming began at a young age. As a former desert rat, born and raised in Las Vegas, Nevada, she spent most of her summers escaping the desert heat in a pool. She started competitive swimming in high school where she swam all four years on the Varsity Women's Swim Team for Cheyenne High School. She also participated in recreational swim teams during the off season. Karstin has over 9 years of professional aquatics experience as a Lifeguard, Lifeguard Instructor, Water Safety Instructor, Water Safety Instructor Trainer Candidate, Pool Manager, and Aquatic Coordinator. She studied Recreation and Leisure Services at the University of Nevada Las Vegas before moving to Colorado in 2014. The most rewarding part of swim instruction for Karstin is the moment a swimmer realizes they can do what they set out to accomplish and the boost in self-esteem they experience.

Terry “Speed” Heggy
Masters Coach 

Terry’s love of swimming began in the flatlands, where he competed with the Wichita Swim Club and the University of Kansas. After moving to Colorado after college, he started coaching a YMCA Masters Swim Team in Denver in 1982. In 1986, he began a 30-year career as Head Coach of the Foothills Masters Swim Team in Littleton, CO. During those years, his swimmers achieved numerous individual National Championships and Top Ten rankings. He also served in various positions with the Colorado Masters Swimming Association (COMSA), and received their “Coach of the Year” award. His individual accomplishments include a USMS National Championship in the 10K open water swim, competing in the USAT Olympic-distance triathlon National Championships, and numerous Masters swimming age group State Championships. He is also a Level 3 Certified Masters Swim Coach and NASM Certified Personal Trainer.

Terry’s articles for USMS “Streamlines” and SWIMMER magazine demonstrate his passion for helping each athlete achieve their goals and get the most from their swimming experience. His coaching philosophy is to provide a fun and positive environment for all athletes—regardless of experience or ability—and to consistently make workouts fun, challenging, and rewarding.

I look forward to meeting all the athletes in the area, and encourage everyone to come give the Masters Team a try. I am really excited to become a part of Team Sopris, and am committed to doing my best to help the team grow and prosper!”

Marissa Lins
Dryland Fitness Instructor

Marissa Lins is certified by the Pilates Method Alliance and has been teaching Pilates for 16 years.

She owned and operated Madison Pilates INC in Madison, WI for 10 years and developed the comprehensive teacher training program for the Midwest Pilates Institute. In 2012 she published her first book Teaching Pilates: Comprehensive Manual.  She specializes in working with clients who have specific movement limitations due to injury, inflammation, and improper alignment. She has worked with a wide range of clients from children to professional athletes and is looking forward to developing the dryland program for Team Sopris.

She began swimming at the age of 4 and swam for many years on her hometown swim team. She is the proud mom of Alexander (age 8) who swims with Team Sopris and Benjamin (age 3) who tries to keep up with his older brother in the pool.
